Spotlight on Scott Bentley!!

jaime-by-bentley-salon.jpg

The spotlight is shining on Scott Bentley! He is the owner and artistic director of Bentley Salon in Tampa, Florida. Scott opened the salon in March of 2007 and the growth and success has been incredible. Scott is extremely creative and inspirational. Here is a snapshot of his fabulous life and how he's developed Bentley Salon.

How did you end up working in the hair and fashion industry?
I was working at a nite club as a barback, driving for an escort service and getting in too many fights. I wasn't sure what to do but I have always wanted to work with my hands and be creative. So I went to cosmetology school and found a hidden passion.

Besides being a Hairstylist and now owning your own salon, what are your ideas for spreading the Bentley love and educating current/future stylists?
Well, we really want to be able to contribute to the growth of the industry. We hold classes in the salon that are all about education, motivation and sharing ideas. As a salon team, we really are reaching out to other stylists as this motivates us as well. In April, we have an event unlike anything the Tampa area has seen. Keep checking our myspace site for more information over the next 3 weeks. For now, all I can say is it will be a day featuring many great hairstylists, education, motivation, inspiration and some great music. We really are excited. It's all about Always Moving Forward..hint hint

What are your other current projects?
One of our focuses are photoshoots to teach total concept. We hold model nights every Tuesday in the salon for staff. I'm going to North Carolina on March 2nd to help host a charity drive by Dream In Colour (see our top friends list for more information) to raise $85,000 for a stylist who lost their home in Hurricane Katrina.

Bentley Salon has been a tremendous success so far. What was key to this success?
Facing any and all fears. Having balance in life and helping each other out at all times. We are developing into a team of leaders that are not afraid to follow each other.

Who or What inspires you?
I would be a liar if I said I don't look within for inspiration. If you can't rely upon yourself, then who can you? My parents and my wife Erin. She is my calm and support. She takes part in my passion but never makes it hers. The Bentley Salon Team!!!!!!! Of course, these people are always there to listen and make suggestions. Just watching them work is an awesome thing. Make up, cut, extensions and color. They seem to make it effortless.

What’s your fashion staple? Describe your style?
HAHAHA. Well, I tend to wear jeans and t- shirts with sneakers. It really depends on the mood and situation. Let's leave it at Diesel jeans are the only ones to fit. I love jewlery and hats. My shirts need to be above belt and lean. Comfort is key. I do own more than a handful of suits though. Dressed down with some hightops or vans and we're good!

Heima by Sigur Rós is Epic.

sigurros-by-john-best.jpg sigur-ros-by-john-best.jpg sigur-ros-waterfall-by-john-best.jpg

No words can capture the beauty of Heima.

Pair the music of Sigur Rós with the beautiful scenes of Iceland and the result is Heima. It is incredible. It captures Sigur Rós in their element. They are true artists who create musical masterpieces purely because they love doing it.

Parts of the interviews reveal this because they could care less about touring non-stop around the world and the business aspects of the music industry. They just want to play music at home. The idea to produce Heima was their own. It gave the families of Iceland a rare chance to experience Sigur Rós in unusual venues for free and it gives us the chance to experience the same on screen.

Heima is a documentary of Sigur Rós’ tour of their home country of Iceland. The performances range “from the smallest show at a Snaefell protest camp (incidentally the first time the band had ever played acoustically anywhere) to the biggest shows of the band’s career in Reykjavik. It was the largest show ever in Iceland with around 25,000 people. All of the shows on the tour were free. Only two of the shows, Reykjavik and Oxnadalur were publicly announced, with the other smaller community hall show and Asbyrgi relying purely on word-of-mouth.

They stopped at many amazing places on the two-week jaunt around the country, some with audiences and some without. A disused herring factory at Djupavik, with its strange circular fish-oil tanks in which Jonsi sang ‘Gitardjamm’; a lonely protest camp against the building of a dam in the pristine wilderness; a traditional “Thorrablot” meal with an audience of pagans, among them.

‘Heima’ was filmed entirely on location in Iceland by Sigur Rós (ón Þór (Jónsi) Birgisson, Kjartan (Kjarri) Sveinsson, Orri Páll Dýrason and Georg (Goggi) Holm). All of the music was recorded live on the road with absolutely no overdubs by Birgir Jon Birgisson, who is the engineer at Sigur Ros’s studio in Alafoss, and Ken Thomas, co-producer of ‘Agaetis Byrjun’, ‘( )’ and ‘Takk…'” Read the full account of Heima here…

The Teenagers – 2008 Homecoming Kings!!

Originally from Paris and now living in London, Dorian Dumont, Michael Szpiner and Quentin Delafon have been friends since school, but it wasn’t until the Christmas of 2005, after a couple of drinks they wrote their first song together. They made a myspace page and posted the song as a joke for their friends and the kids went crazy for it…

Here come The Teenagers.  They are about to play a string of dates in the US and Canada and then will be back in London with Justice at the Astoria.

Steve Poltz is a Legend.

steve-poltz-by-henry-diltz.jpg

I saw him play for the first time at the Saxon Pub in Austin, Texas in 2004. It was the Sunday night following the SXSW mayhem. I pretty much went to see him on a whim because I thought his website was hilarious. I hadn’t even listened to any of his music.

The first time I met Steve, we were both wearing converse and matching socks… haha
theconverse.jpg

Steve is one of the most charismatic, hilarious, beautiful people ever. His stories and smile light up a room. He is about to release two new CDs called Traveling and Unraveling and is currently touring the world. His CD Release tour begins at Joe’s Pub in New York City on the 22nd of January.

I couldn’t detail out his biography any better than it already has been so here it is straight from Steve’s site:
“He trick-or-treated at Liberace’s house, planned a two-day stay in Amsterdam that ended a month later with him escaping the city under the cover of darkness, and was Bob Hope’s favorite altar boy. Alone, these anecdotes go well with a fistful of peanuts at a cocktail party. But on top of these add that this person also co-wrote the longest-running song on the Billboard Top 100, had a debut solo album that earned three and a half stars in Rolling Stone, and was awarded the title of “San Diego’s Most Influential Artist of the Decade” at the San Diego Music Awards. What you end up with is one of the most engaging, twisted, and prolific songwriters of our time – Steve Poltz.”  Read the rest of it here…

Check out these interviews that he just did with Geoff Young for the Ducksnorts (San Diego Padres baseball club) page:

You should definitely check out his latest escapades on his web site. He’s always updating it with crazy stories and songs.

Army of Me gives me chills.

armyofme-by-evan-sisley.jpg

In 2005, I was invited to come hang out and DJ with Kill Hannah and The Sounds at a party at SXSW. It just so happened that Army of Me performed at that party! I had never heard of them before that night, but was instantly impressed. You can definitely sense that they are genuinely passionate about music. This obviously comes across in their live show, but that energy is totally captured on their recordings.

Vince Scheuerman, Brad Tursi and Dennis Manuel formed Army of Me in 2001. They toured constantly throughout the States and developed a passionate regional fanbase. This led to sold out shows at the 9:30 Club in DC and several venues in New York City.

CITIZEN was released April 10, 2007 on Doghouse Records. Their single “Going Through Changes” has been added at KROQ in LA, WOCL in Orlando, DC101 in Washington DC, XM and SIRIUS Radio.

Vince recently led a songwriting workshop with a 4th grade class in DC where they were tasked to write and record a song in three days! The result is a song called “Me and My KFC.” It’s hilarious! Read the story and check out this video of the making of the song. It’s priceless.

The band is kicking off the New Year with a show at the Rock and Roll Hotel in DC on the 1st of February. Go see them if you can!

I love these lyrics from “Perfect.”

“One day, I’ll be perfect
I’ll be so extraordinary
I will shine. I will radiate.
One day, I’ll be perfect.
I’ll be so extraordinary.
I will take your breath away…”
